Tumors of Conjunctiva

Tumours of the conjunctiva, also known as conjunctival neoplasms, are abnormal growths that can develop on the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye. They can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can vary in size, shape, and appearance.

There are several types of tumours that can develop on the conjunctiva, including:

  • Squamous cell papilloma: This is the most common benign tumour of the conjunctiva, which typically presents as a small, round, flesh-coloured or pink growth.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: This is a malignant tumour that typically presents as a large, raised, or ulcerated growth on the conjunctiva, it can be pigmented or non-pigmented.
  • Melanoma: This is a malignant tumour that can appear as a pigmented (darkly coloured) growth on the conjunctiva. It is rarer than other conjunctival tumours but is more aggressive.

Tumours of the conjunctiva can occur due to a variety of factors, including:

  • UV light exposure, which increases the risk of conjunctival melanoma
  • Exposure to chemical irritants
  • Previous ocular surgery
  • Genetic predisposition

Symptoms of conjunctival tumours may include:

  • A visible growth on the conjunctiva
  • Changes in the size or shape of the growth over time
  • Irritation or discomfort in the eye
  • Blurred vision
  • redness

Treatment for conjunctival tumours will depend on the type and stage of the tumour. Benign tumours may be treated with surgical excision, while malignant tumours may require more extensive treatment, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Prevention of Tumours of Conjunctiva:

  • Wearing protective eyewear, such as sunglasses, to protect the eyes from UV light
  • Avoiding exposure to chemical irritants
  • Seeking regular eye exams and monitoring any unusual growths or changes in the eyes
  • Seeking prompt medical attention for any symptoms of a tumour
